14 Habits To Try Adopting Right Now

We all have habits. Things that we do without even thinking about them. We have good habits, like brushing our teeth in the morning and before bed, and we have bad habits like biting our nails. In our adult life, we often become aware of some of the habits that we would rather not have, or we think about habits that we would love to have. The truth is when we focus on what we want to change, nothing actually changes. All we are doing is binging our self confidence down and picking ourselves a part.

So, take this blog post as a sign that you need to change your mindset right now. Start making yourself better rather than making yourself worse by focusing on all the things you don’t like or hoping to have habits that you admire and never actually creating them.

Take those steps right now to make the changes you’ve always wanted to make. It all starts with just starting. Every day we have a choice to do or not to do. It’s easy to not do something, but it’s just as easy to do something, and if makes life better why wouldn’t we choose to do it?

14 Habits To Try Adopting Right Now

  1. Read 10 pages in the morning of a non-fiction book.
  2. Save “X” amount of dollars every day. Be realistic and keep it simple. To inspire you to act small but think big, I will share with you that I’m currently saving $5 per day. I know it’s not a lot, but over time, it adds up, and as I get more and more comfortable with saving, maybe I will bump it up to $6 and then $7? Do what you can right now, with what you have.
  3. Drink 8oz of water right when you wake up before your morning coffee.
  4. Choose one daily chore to accomplish around the house every day – so that it doesn’t pile up. It could be 5 minutes of sweeping in the kitchen, or putting the dishes in the dishwasher away, or wiping down the counters in the bathroom, etc.
  5. Stretch for 10 minutes every day – injury prevention must! It’s funny, I used to stretch all the time when I was younger, somehow in the last two years I’ve fallen off my game a bit, but I see how my dad is suffering from severe knee pain all because his hamstrings and glutes are severely tight! Keep on stretching.
  6. Stop eating when you are full, or right before you feel really full – seriously. Why do we keep putting ourselves in a food coma? Or this might be the reason why we are always complaining about the ten pounds we need to lose.
  7. Make the bed every morning – I know it sounds silly but it starts the day with a small chore of feeling put together and productive and organized vs. disorganized, in a rush, and all over the place.
  8. Choose positive thoughts. We have a choice to think the thoughts we think. Choose positive ones. Studies have shown that the more positive your thinking, the happier you are, the more successful you will be in life – both in career, family, personal development, etc.
  9. Write your to-do list down the night before, not the morning of, so that you can go straight into your day the next day.
  10. Meal Prep – the weeks where I meal prep – life is so much easier. The weeks where I don’t, I’m eating late at night, grabbing something on the go, eating the wrong things, or spending money where it doesn’t need to be spent.
  11. Every day write down 3 things you are grateful for OR a moment that made you really happy that day. It can be as simple as watching a YouTube video that made you laugh.
  12. Do one small act of kindness every day. It could be a thank you to a friend, holding the door for someone, complimenting someone, etc.
  13. Keep the “Thank You” note alive! It’s amazing what a “thank you” note can do. When someone gets you a gift, or takes you out to dinner to celebrate your promotion, or gives you a promotion at work, or your intern did a really great job on the project you assigned him or her, make a hand written thank you note. It is heart warming and really can make someone’s day by showing our appreciation.
  14. Get outside every day. Even ten minutes of fresh air. Whether it’s parking your car further away at the grocery store, just to get a little more fresh air, or actually going for a walk around your neighborhood or office. Fresh air has proven to inspire the mind, body, and soul and keep us more productive in our daily lives.
